Christmas is around the corner and everyone is getting ready for the presents, the seasonal shopping, and the celebration, but once we're in January we often regret some of the thing we got, and the debt in our credit cards are a constant remainder.

That's why I'm sharing with you these tips for smarter shopping, I've been learning a couple of these things along the way, specially because I used to spend a lot of money in things that I ended up giving away. ¡But not anymore!

Here's my list, not in special order:

10. Always shop thinking about your current job.

One of the biggest mistakes we make when we shop is that we end up buying clothing that don't match our current lifestyle. It's a very often mistake between people who work in offices or in a formal job space. If you know that most of your time is gonna be involved in your job, then you'll need clothing for that, not a million pair of sneakers for the weekend, you need clothes for work. I'm not trying to say that you should buy clothes for other kind of occasions, but if we're talking about saving money, you need to buy functional clothes for your current lifestyle.

9. Quality over quantity. (Calidad antes que cantidad)

It's an old saying that also applies when it comes to shopping. Avoid as much as you can clothing that you know for sure that aren't very well made but you're thinking about buying it because of the good price. Cheap purchases ended up costing a lot more than the original price just because they won't last at all. Be smart and picky, there are great quality products with also good prices, it just takes eagle eye and practice. I personally rather buy one single item with very good quality (and with a regular price), than ten items that are cheap and misleading not matter how "great" they look at first glance.

8. If it fits, buy it every color. ¡FALSE!

There's a huge difference between having a rich-full wardrobe than having a wardrobe full of the same things but in different colors. Avoid uniforming yourself with the same staff everyday and spend your money in clothing that make you look different. ¡There are so many options, there's a huge store for you to pick! It's ok to have 20 hats, but it's amazing when you can tell which one is not like the other.

7. Listen to your heart, not the tag.

Who doesn't like it when it's sale season? We all love the sales because it's a great way to save money, but it doesn't mean you have to buy the entire store just because most of the items have a huge percent off, buy just exactly what looks great on you and items that you really want. You used to want a cute pair of boots? Great, find them and try them out, but don't end up leaving the store with that floral skirt when you don't even like florals!

6. You have one specific place to shop? Stop it and try them all. (Prueba diferentes almacenes, no seas fiel solo a uno).

I love it when there are many malls and places to buy clothing. I have favorite places where I always stop and see what's new, I pick a few things and then leave as fast as I can because I know the possibilities are endless in other stores or malls, and the things that I find always put a smile on my face. There's nothing worse than buying something in one specific place and then go to another shop just to see that there are much better options and you have no money left. There's nothing to lose, go to different shops, if you don't like anything, then don't buy anything, but there's always a chance to find amazing stuff in the long run.

5. Invest more in classic pieces, less in trends. (Invierte en clásicos, menos tendencias).

The word speaks for itself. Trend: they come and go, they don't last. Trends are amazing but I highly suggest you to buy one or two items in fast fashion stores (because they are not that expensive) and rather use your money to buy clothing that you know are gonna last forever not matter the season. What about investing in a great cut blazer? A cute black dress? A pair of classic stilettos?

4. Have your own black list. (Ten tu propia lista negra)

I don't believe in second chances when it comes to clothing or food. If there's a very expensive piece than end up losing its color very fast, or a pair of shoes that lost half of its soil in the first walk, or whatever it is, avoid buying items from that store or brand, you don't want another surprise right? There's always an exception, if the store covers the item with a guaranty then you can give them a second chance, but if the process is sore, long and boring to replace one item, then it's up to you if you keep buying thing from them. I don't want to talk about cheap clothing because the quality is always unexpected.

3. Be truthful with your size. (Se sincero con tu talla).

Before shopping, there's nothing better than have loud and clear your measurements. Never shop for clothing bigger or smaller than your current body type, even when you're willing to go to the "gym to lose or gain weight". It also applies to shoes. They don't get bigger with the use, just buy your current exact size. If you buy clothing that's not your fit, you'll ended up giving them away and that's not a smart way to save money.

2. Shop till you drop. ¡It's not a smart move even if you can afford it!

"Smart shopping" is called like that for a reason, even if you can afford "buying until you drop", you should keep in mind topics such as the environment, consumerism, and shopping addiction, which is a disease. And if you can't afford too much shopping, then don't do it until things get better or have special savings just to do that. There's nothing worse than having a huge amount of credit card debt because of "shopping", going from store to store it's a luxury at the end of the day and you should know when to stop.

1. Versatile clothing for every occasion. (Versatilidad ante todo).

Make sure to buy clothing that you know can be worn in many different ways, in different seasons, events, or occasions. There's not point in buying a collection of beanies when you know you can't wear them outside because of the heat, or in the office, or at church, or at a formal meeting, see? It has very few specific moments of use. In the other hand, a well cut denim jacket could be use on the weekends, day and night, and even at the office on Fridays. Before buying an item, think how many ways you can use it, if you can't picture yourself with a couple of ensembles with that on, don't buy it.
